Artist: Rita Cook

Rita Cook is a Dallas-based artist who creates art by using acrylic paint on mirror and glass, and to a lesser degree on canvas and paper. Her style offers a hint of Lyrical Abstraction meets Orphism using colors and expressions that echo infinite forms and reflections. It is a swirling combination of what one of her strong influence's Wassily Kandinsky (a pioneer of abstract modern art) offers as he said "the artist training not only her eye, but her soul." "As a writer for many years and now having the expression of art I have quickly realized art is the story I am writing without using words," Rita explains. "My ability to be a world citizen and now communicating in a language everyone speaks, this is a powerful universal code of images and colors that communicates directly to the subconscious mind." By using mirrors and glass in her art, Rita's symbolism takes the expression further as this median offers innumerable symbolic connotations for the audience to decipher while confronting the existence of their own reflection.

Considered sustainable in her art genre, Rita's mirrors and canvas are recycled using discovered and repurposed material, thus giving each piece a new life through her creations. "Of all the media I have used to paint and create this year the mirror has finally been the media with acrylic that is where my creation belongs right now," Rita adds. "The mirrors have become the easiest way to create my magical artworks because mirrors do not lie. Each mirror has a history with the frame that has protected it for possibly years. When the owner of my mirror art piece looks at the images on the mirror - the mirror reflects back exactly what the owner is supposed to see, but the soul and the ego can be friends and the mirror will reflect what will be will be, but each person can change that destiny. The mirror changes with the story of the owner." Rita is also well-known in Texas and around the globe as a travel/auto/lifestyle writer; political journalist; author of 10 published books and a former press secretary for a Texas State Representative. She has visited 108 countries, all 50 states and previously lived in Los Angeles, California; Long Island, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Paris, France and she spent six months traveling in India as the means to find the energy of the goddess Kali.

Self-Portrait at E Gallery Studios, 1110 Dragon Street, Dallas.

Opened September 1, 2022/Closed February 28, 2023

"Self-Portrait" is the reflection of the viewer looking into the mirror and looking back at himself and seeing exactly what she needs to be looking back - from an unconscious place. Self-Portrait, 2022 (Acrylic on mirror and glass) Painting on mirror, glass with a hint of Lyrical Abstraction meets Orphism is what artist Rita Cook's style forms using colors echoing infinite forms and reflections. A swirling combination of what one of her strong influence's Wassily Kandinsky might have said was "the artist training not only her eye, but her soul." As the words of Kandinsky expressed "an object can only legitimately be considered art if it is an unadulterated, outward manifestation of the artist's psyche-of his or her authentic thoughts and feelings." A truth of Cook's painting on mirror and glass in her Self-Portrait series.

Cook's abstract work begins with an expression seen through her decades of writing words that are now being expressed wordlessly in a genre that creates from a different part of the psyche.

"As a writer for many years and now having the expression of art I have quickly realized that very much indeed, art is the story I am writing without using words," Cook said. "My ability to be a world citizen and now communicating in a language everyone speaks, that powerful universal code of images and colors that communicates directly to the subconscious mind." Thus is the story of the mirror series Self-Portrait. Cook strongly relates to the works of Kandinsky and has also been impressed by Hilma of Klint who was heavily influenced by Rosicrucianism. Other strong influences are artists based in the Lyrical Abstract, which uses "a gestural and personal form of abstraction." Ernest Schneider, a Swiss painter and a strong pioneer of Lyrical Abstraction was one such influence as has been Han Hartung and Abstract Expressionist painters Helen Frankenthaler, Alice Baber, and Joan Mitchell.

The Orphism Movement founded by Sonia Delaney has played a role in what Cook's work currently represents along with David Burliuk, Mikhail Fyodorovich Larionovm, Frank Kupka, the latter a pioneer and co-founder of the early phases of the abstract art movement and Orphic Cubism.

Another influence Kazimir Severinovich Malevich, a Polish-Ukrainian Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist, who had a strong influence on the development of non-objective art in the 20th century coining the term Suprematism.

"An Artist must train not only his eye, but his soul." Kandinsky stressed in his role as a pioneer of abstract modern art.

Cook's work takes that same abstract approach inspired by Kandinsky's words while being coupled with her creations primarily on mirror and glass, which have the ability in this century to communicate universal themes of the "unconscious" through the artist's inner experience in the now. By using mirrors and glass in her art, Cook's symbolism takes the expression further as this median offers innumerable symbolic connotations for the audience to decipher while confronting the existence of the reflection. And that reflection, as Cook stated of Self-Portrait "becomes the inner portrait of what you see, as who you think you are and each of our reflections will be very different."

Artist Musings:

I don't have any children, but this year I have ended up birthing 90+ of these little things that I call my children. Piling up around me having been birthed with acrylics, mirror, canvas, watercolor paper, and frames. And the colors of my children astound me. So much so that I often fret and wonder why there aren't more colors to choose from in this infinite world of space and time. The dance of my art began as a writer (a small child with a big imagination) and a traveler (dreams become reality) traveling everywhere around the world - 25 years of it. I found myself with a variety of travel companions, but it was me and the French aristocrat who I found the most trouble with over the years. All these moments I saw with my eyes storing the memories inside like stars both esoteric and sometimes not so esoteric… and then earlier this year… … the stars began flowing. These stars that had been storing up inside me began flowing like midnight raining colorful sprinkles down. The ideas for these paintings came out on glass, and mirror and canvas and paper and wood mesmerizing me with the dual movement of me and the creation. It was as if a tantra of energy was flowing solo. And it was! That was 2022 and the beat goes on...

Flashback to the not so great American artist that I could have been years ago: over time, and I won't fret about it, but I have lost a good amount of art that I created. Like the time I was on my first cruise in Europe on a slow-moving yacht from Athens, Greece to Venice, Italy on the Mediterranean so where else but to do art. Now I've lost it watercolor on paper as I sipped Kir Royale along with skeet shooting and silver trays and proper linen - that was my art then - but Ihad no time. I was a writer so let my artist friends do the art, tsk, tsk.

I was surprised though on that yacht I had etched out more than just a stick figure - just a little bit of art. My travel photography of course is a must at any time. Then there was the time it turned into a short-lived esoteric photo series. Black and white with charcoal colors - images of me and my goddess roots around the world. I decided I didn't want to give away my soul like that. And I was living with a miserable old boyfriend fulfilling some silly promise and that collapsed too, and I went to Paris. Then jumping into the abyss - this is when I barely could see the art, I still had no idea. It was just silent whispers. Then suddenly in 2022 I discovered it was time to find the voice of my soul. For a writer like me, well, finally I was glad I wasn't going to have to say a thing.

Since I began this journey in March 2022 some of my artist friends have compared my work to the other artists who I admire and who I have learned about as the stories unfold. I have a lot of styles though depending on the voice that I tap into with my subconscious. Sometimes I feel like someone's soul is showing me what to draw so the person can

find it and own it - so I can connect that together. Some of the art I create doesn't even have any of me in it - except it does because I created it.

Sometimes I am sure my art is creating itself.

One of my mentors and friends knew how to draw a thing and it would come true - very quickly. Kind of reminds me of the genie in the bottle.

I began to consider what an idea to draw and create and see where it led me - it led me into my soul. Soul magick when you figure out how to tap into it - with the energy of love. So, I have infused energy into each of my art pieces and with this energy infused it means the owner who is destined to find and own my art piece will purchase it. The energy has been infused into the art piece for the buyer. It works like that. Since I began this journey of painting in 2022 I took a three week visit to India and Nepal during the beginning of summer 2022. From that trip I brought back even more for my soul to create for my Mirror Series:

    My Self-Portrait mirror series:

    The Old,

    The New,

Do you dare to look at you?

Of all the media I have used to paint and create this year the mirror has finally been the media with acrylic that is where my creation belongs right now. The mirrors have become the easiest way to create my magical artworks because

mirrors do not lie. Each mirror has a history with the frame that has protected it for possibly years. When the owner of my mirror art piece looks at the images on the mirror - the mirror reflects back exactly what the owner sees is supposed to see But the soul and the ego can be friends and the mirror will reflect what will be will be, but each person can change that destiny. The mirror changes with the story too. The frames with the mirror in this series are as important as the symbols - together the frame and the symbols create the magick of the art.
